My experience with the GM Diet

Me? Diet? Never. In my head, dieting means depriving myself of certain foods or limiting your food or changing what you eat for extended periods of time. I could never be convinced to try any type of diet. I eat what I want and I do play a lot of soccer which invariably helps me maintain my weight.

Unfortunately for me, I also like a challenge. Late 2014, my co-worker challenged me to the GM diet which she has been on a couple of times. She has seen me eat, knows how much I love my food and was convinced that I couldn’t do the diet. Fortunately though, you see, unlike most diets, this only lasts for a week. So, I put on my ‘troll’ challenge accepted face!

The GM diet was originally developed at General Motors to help their employees lose weight. It has of course, grown well beyond the walls of GM.

Here’s the quick and dirty version of the plan:
Every day, You must drink at least 10 glasses of water. 1 glass is about 8 oz.

Day 1: Unlimited quantities of fruit. NO bananas! Stick to just melons for better results

Day 2: Vegetables today. Unlimited quantities. No restrictions on type

Day 3: Combination of the previous 2 days. Unlimited vegetables and fruits. No banana still. You are allowed to eat 1 baked potato in the morning.
Note: Some of you might recognize, the first 3 days is really the Daniel fast!
Day 4: You can eat up to 8 bananas and drink up to 3 glasses of milk
Day 5: Two portions of 10 oz (.28kg) of beef and 8 tomatoes.
I basically ate twice today. I stewed the beef in the tomatoes.

Day 6: Unlimited beef and vegetables.
Day 7: Unlimited Brown rice, fruit juices and vegetables.
I weighed 192 lbs (87kg) when I started the plan, and weighed 183 lbs (83kg) after just 7 days. More importantly, I was this same weight for about 2-3 weeks after I resumed my regular diet, so I know it wasn’t just water weight.Ayo Lapite

Also, because I had to force myself to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day which I didn’t do on a normal day, I now drink lots of water during the day as a learned habit. I’m not going to lie and tell you that, “Oh, I feel so much better in my body or…I only have headaches now once a week instead of five”…and all the other good stuff that’s supposed to happen from drinking plenty water, but, I know it’s good for me and that’s what matters.

    So how much do you weigh now? I just thought I would ask

    • Lol, Maggie, Let’s just say the diet allowed me to enjoy Christmas to the max! I am now a fuller version of myself 🙂 Let me answer the question in a couple months 😉

    Did you make and eat the cabbage soup in the link? Thinking of trying ….9 lbs is very tempting.

    • No, I didn’t try the cabbage soup. I did cook mixed veggies(green beans, carrots, peas, broccoli) though, sort of like a stir fry, but no oil, very little salt and black pepper. I also ate apples and carrots.

      I think day 1 was the hardest for me. It got progressively easier. Try it and let me know how it goes! Good luck!
